I have to say Ive not yet had the good fortune to see a show where Dylan performs, Sold Rock, though after the barn burning performance him and his band give of the song in Vegas on 10/20/02 well basically I do not see how they could ever again capture the intensity captured on this very night. Its one for the ages. And while listening to it over and over and over again because it is just so darn catchy as well as Spiritually uplifting what I find so odd about it is the vocal because as dedicated and majestic and immersed in faith as the vocal may be to me its quite possibly as well the greatest rock vocal Ive ever heard anyone deliver at any time. Its as if instead of testifying to his faith in a God, Bob is in fact paying tribute to music and as well rock music for how it has carried him across the water time and time again when he was sure his boat was going to sink. People talk about his growl his rasp like it is something to be avoided at all possible costs and yet I love what Bob chooses to do with the basket of vipers lodged in his throat and this is certainly one of those times when he pulls out all the stops making perfectly clear his voice is an instrument emitting trumpet like blasts from his throat which I swear could open all seven seals and maybe that is exactly what Bob had in mind on this very night. For me this vocal is as important as Chuck Berrys when he performs such numbers as, Johnny B. Goode, or, Carol, or, Promised Land, or any of the many amazing songs he delivers upon us like manna from a very driven and provocative Heaven. Bobs vocal not just his lyrics helped turn on an entire generation back in the sixties and I believe he is still doing that today: turning us on with his Spirited lone cry in the wilderness voice and on October 20th. 2002 in Las Vegas he came out just like he did at Newport in 1965 and plugged us in with his special fusion of music and faith. Faith in whatever it is you choose to believe in. Bob obviously chooses the music and pulls no punches when he gives unto us this Solid Rock and Roll stunner that keeps me and I pray all of us hanging on. Wait till you hear, "Mama You Been On My Mind", and really the whole entire performance well I mean it's so much more than a performance or a concert - I mean ya sure it's all of that, but it is more like what basic beauty stripped down to its very purest essence is -- no ego - no ulterior motives - nothing but a big beating heart full of piss and vinegar, but redeemed through the acceptance of how things are - not how they must be, but just how they are -- no apathy - nothing worked over or held back - no looking back either - moments of quiet reflection perhaps, but mostly just a forward motion - a perpetual zeitgeist - a creative gestalt for the timeless ages - a priceless kiss - no more betrayal - disloyalty no longer accepted as a broken and weary virtue -- he is saved - constantly in a state of grace through his work to keep being born - nothing lifeless up there - no mannequins - nothing replicated or revisited - even Highway 61 has been lost in the wreckage - I bet he doesn't even feel the miles he travels any longer - he's free from the chains of the skyway!!! =================== =================== ===================
