In The Garden Blessed Be The Name Pressing On* *On the audio disks that we received, "Pressing On" was out of its proper order (being located before "In the Garden"). An examination of "Pressing On" reveals, however, that it certainly is from the 11-11-1979 show. See the commentary of Watt Alexander below where it is noted that on this night Dylan sang "many try to stop me, put doubt into my mind" (this line varies considerably from night to night). Although my preference is to leave shows just as I received them, in this case -- where it is known what the correct order of songs is -- I have moved "Pressing On" to final position. I should also note that the track "In the Garden" matches Watt Alexander's reference to the 11-11 performance where Dylan sings "when they heard him speak in the city/when he spoke to them in the city"... but lacks the features that identify his source recordings -- namely, a cry from the audience "Party!" and an edit in the applause. Here is the info from Watt Alexander's site "The Gospel Project"; as can be seen, he did not have access to the complete version torrented here. 11 NOVEMBER 1979 WARFIELD THEATER - SAN FRANCISCO, CA Dylan sets only, though a complete show is rumored to circulate. (Combination of two very good audience recordings) SETLIST: SERVE SOMEBODY/I BELIEVE IN YOU/WHEN YOU GONNA WAKE UP?/WHEN HE RETURNS/MAN GAVE NAMES TO ALL THE ANIMALS/PRECIOUS ANGEL/ SLOW TRAIN COMING/COVENANT WOMAN/PUT YOUR HAND IN THE HAND (Regina Havis, vocals)/GONNA CHANGE MY WAY OF THINKING/DO RIGHT TO ME BABY/SOLID ROCK/SAVING GRACE/SAVED/WHAT CAN I DO FOR YOU/ IN THE GARDEN/BLESSED IS THE NAME/PRESSING ON COMMENTARY: November 11th is another very fine show capping a strong six- performance week. From the first notes of "Serve Somebody," Dylan and the band are on, and the momentum simply builds. If the first half is simply very good, the entire second half of the concert is superlative. Any of these performances could fit on a "Best of Warfield 1979" collection. ANNOTATIONS: SERVE SOMEBODY 1,2,4/3,guitar,5,keyboards,6 (2) "drugs at your command" (5) "maybe even be somebody's heir" (6) "might be a - guh - uh , might like to eat bread." I BELIEVE IN YOU nice performance, organ droning gets a bit annoying WHEN YOU GONNA WAKE UP? 1,2,3,6,organ/guitar,5,8,7,organ/guitar,9,outro CROWD: "Corpse Evangelist!" WHEN HE RETURNS nice performance, it almost always is MAN GAVE NAMES TO ALL THE ANIMALS nice performance, though the keyboards seem a bit obtrusive towards the beginning PRECIOUS ANGEL beginning just a bit tentative, with Dylan perhaps trying to slow down tempo? Very nice performance, relatively straightforward, but a tight sound once it gets going. Dylan's singing is especially strong. #EDIT - during applause SLOW TRAIN COMING Guitar leads in, strong singing Dylan: "and there's a slow . . . . slow train comin" on chorus to stanza beginning with "big-time negotiators" Syncopated "coming/coming/coming" COVENANT WOMAN (2) "shinin (?) like an empty cup" Dylan: " Thank you . . Regina McCreary's going to come out here and sing a song called, "Put Your Hand In The Hand Of The Man."" #EDIT - during applause, omits "Put Your Hand In The Hand" PUT YOUR HAND IN THE HAND (Regina McCreary, vocals) CROWD: "Bob Dylan all the way!" GONNA CHANGE MY WAY OF THINKING very strong performance - band in fine form DO RIGHT TO ME BABY Fred Tackett playing almost a backbeat acoustic guitar riff on this performance (2) "Recommended/defended/confused/used" (3) "Played with/be betrayed/don't want to look at nobody unless I decide to/don't want to be lied to" (4) "buried/married/missed/not even a scientist" begins to fade out on song, they string along ending until can get all together - done nicely. Dylan: " (inaudible) Is that right? You see, we're living in the end of times now; are we living in the end of times? On the last days of peril the son shall redeem and men will become lovers of their own selves, is that right? So you'll need something strong to hold on to. This one's called, Hanging On To A Solid Rock, Made Before The Foundation Of The World." SOLID ROCK quick pace - Tackett has nice riff leading into first full verse "everybody's counting on a false peace to come" Tackett waits additonal four measures to start solo - then flies Dylan begins "ways of the flesh" after six measures - midway to usual approach #EDIT - during applause, clips tuning on next song SAVING GRACE Another very strong performance CROWD: "Just Like A Woman!" "Highway 61!" SAVED Another very strong performance - crowd uproar at first chorus (2) By his strength I can be upright, by his love I do endure, by his power I've been lifted, by his power I endure." (3) "though I have been lifted, by his mercy I've been spared." WHAT CAN I DO FOR YOU "you . . . have . . done everything for me, what can I do for you" - Dylan begins two measures too early? Phrases coinsistently throughout remainder. Beautiful first harp solo - swaying (3) "you have given me life to live/you have given all there is to give" "whatever pleases you won't you go and tell it to my heart, I don't deserve it, but I have made it through." Continuing to stretch out the harp solo at the end Very strong applause IN THE GARDEN (2) when they heard him speak in the city/when he spoke to them in the city" also very strong CROWD: "Party!" #EDIT - during applause Dylan: "Thank you. On keyboards tonight, give him a hand, Spooner Oldham. On lead guitar, Fred Tackett. Playing the other set of keyboards tonight and vocals, Terry Young. On the drums tonight, Jim Keltner. On the bass guitar, Mister Tim Drummond. Singing bottom tonight, Miss Helena Springs. Singing in the middle is Regina Havis. And on top, Mona Lisa Young. Alright. I 'd like to say we have the honor to be presenting this show tonight on the authority of Jesus Christ." BLESSED IS THE NAME riff and crowd clapping along to lead in done gone #EDIT - during applause PRESSING ON now set that backing singers join on third refrain of first verse "many try to stop me, put doubt into my mind" SOURCES: Two known reference tapes circulating: The first (111179JMMC) is a dual mono audience recording which lacks the seven opening songs by the band and the eighth song, "Put Your Hand In The Hand Of The Man From Galilee" by the band and sung by Regina Havis following "Covenant Woman." Most of this is a very good recording considering the vintage. Unfortunately, the second half, particularly "Covenant Woman" and "Change My Way Of Thinking," are marred by muddy sound. This recording also includes some obtrusive chatter, particularly annoying on "Precious Angel." Otherwise, it really gives a feel for the fine coordination within this band. The second (111179SCMC) is a dual mono audience recording which also lacks all nine songs performed by the band. This recording is also quite good, marred by occasional obtrusive crowd chatter, and exhibits identical destructive edits preceding "Slow Train" and "Saving Grace" suggesting it is simply another incarnation of the same master recording. It is, nevertheless, notable as it lacks some of the non-destructive edits found on the former recording.
