My friend Pete transfered my MD to CDs, made about 80 copies, posted a message on the pool and promptly sent off the show to all who responded. Back in the snail-mail trading days, pretty much anyone who wanted this show had it within a few weeks of the performance thanks to Pete's generousity. About a year ago i pulled these discs out and realised that it was in mono. No one on CEDAR or anywhere i saw had ever pointed this out before. Unfortunately the transfer of my stereo recording was reduced to mono because of the wrong lead being used. Therefore, all circulating copies from my master will be in mono. There are apparently two versions of this show and mine corresponds to LB-902. If you have this show, please check to see if it's mono. Anyway, i did a new stereo transfer from the original MD, applied hard limiting to the sections of audience applause that were a bit loud and then tweaked with the sound slightly to improve its dynamics. So overall, i class this as a nice upgrade on what has always circulated from this show. Check out the sound samples and see what you think. To my ears it's a really solid recording with no flaws. The venue is a big concrete barn so the sound on the night was a bit boomy and this comes through in the recording but i'm sure everyone will be happy with the sound quality of this recording. ================= Some notes about this show The 2003 Australian tour was Bob's first outing of that year and the first following Charlie's departure from the band in Nov 2002. Billy Burnette (ex-Fleetwood Mac) was drafted in to fill Sexton's large footwear but for whatever reason, he only lasted the 11 shows of this Aus & NZ tour. No doubt Tony passed on the word to Billy to not bother turning up for the following US leg. My guess is that Billy's fate was sealed when he royally pissed Bob off during the Sydney show but i'll detail that in my next torrent (Sydney 03 my master). During this Brisbane show, poor Billy looked terrified and his eyes were permanantly glued on Bob, desperately hoping to catch the cues. He was allowed a few solos and while not messing anything up, he didn't overly impress. Also unimpressed was Larry who looked miserable throughout this show. He stood a long way away from the rest of the band and wore an expression of "what am i doing here after all these years still playing rhythm while this new turkey gets to play lead" plastered on his face for the whole night. Poor Larry looked really pained by his treatment and it was sad to watch. His playing didn't suffer at all though, listen to his sweet pedal steel on You Ain't Goin' Nowhere. Bob appeared to be sufferring a cold or jetlag (or both) but still turned in a good performance. His singing on Saving Grace is really nice and the version of Baby Blue is also top notch. But i remember him having to rest and sit on the drum riser during the encore and also blowing his runny nose between several songs. He also switched from keyboard to acoustic to electric guitar throughout the show, and once all of the above in the same song. His roadie did a bit of running during that number. Brisbane was the best of the 3 shows i saw on this tour so for anyone who hasn't heard it, i hope that you enjoy it. Overall though, Australia 03 was a big let down for me due to the repetitive set lists, the short shows (the were 2 opening acts - The Waifs and Ani DiFranco), and the 'transitional phase' of the band. Here's hoping August 07 is a couple of steps up. ================== ps: My friend Chris came up with the title ""Wherever I'm Welcome is Where I'll Be" for this show and i like it. My Canadian friend Patrick can be heard having a quick chat with me during the outro. I left this in as he notes Bob's apparent ill state and also because it was Pat's birthday and first ever Bob show. I'm glad he was there with us. The download includes a pic of the concert ticket. ==================
