They made a great collection of tapes and allowed all Bob fans to hear these fantastic shows. 2001 is my favourite Australian Bob tour of the NET era. He played 66 different songs over the 9 shows and the performances were solid throughout. I was lucky to see the Brisbane and Ballina shows and then get to listen to Bach and Vito's tapes of the tour. I gave Bach's excellent recording of the Ballina show an eq mix for its 20th anniversary. See if you like it. It was windy at times during the show and started to rain gently during the final song. Not easy conditions to tape in. All thanks again to Bach and Vito. I understand that Bob had specifically requested to play a show in Byron Bay on this 2001 tour but that the local council did not give approval for such an event. So the promoter very wisely then organised a show in nearby Ballina instead. Ballina is a small coastal town which is a 30 minute drive south of Byron. It has a population of around 40,000 people and is known as the home of the Big Prawn. My guess is that Bob Dylan was the first and only international act of any stature to ever play a show in Ballina. This was an outdoor concert held on the local football ground. The stage was set up where the goal posts would normally be. The football field is part of a park that sits on the shores of the Richmond River and the North Creek. Both lead straight into the nearby Pacific Ocean. I wonder if this setting influenced some of Bob's unusual song choices for this show? (Interestingly a few had water references in their lyrics). In Australia, Bob generally played in soulless concrete box 'entertainment centres' that didn't do him justice. His occasional shows in smaller venues and those outside of the capital cities often resulted in much more memorable performances. Ballina 2001 was the perfect example of this. A great crowd and the final show of the tour saw some nice setlist surprises. For example, this is the last time that Bob played Gates Of Eden live. He came back for a very rare 2nd encore - it seemed clear that this was in response to the fantastic crowd reaction and the atmosphere of playing in such an unusual location.
