Transcript by Serge 8 January 2020 The history of "All New Minglewood Blues" is long and complex. The original "Minglewood Blues" was written by Noah Lewis and recorded on January 30, 1928 in Memphis, Tennesse by the Cannons Jug Stompers. Similar blues songs exist and it seems likely that the song was an arrangement of existing material. Personnel: Ashley Thomson vocals & acoustic guitar, Gus Cannon banjo & jug, Noah Lewis harmonica. This song, which also incorporates material from earlier songs, was recorded by the Noah Lewis Jug Band on November 26, 1930 in Memphis, Tennesse. The first version played by the Grateful Dead was based on the 1930 Noah Lewis song "New Minglewood Blues", hence the title used on the first Grateful Dead album "New New Minglewood Blues". The later version played by the Grateful Dead was a reworking of their own earlier version and therefore also based on the 1930 "New Minglewood Blues. The reworking of the song is reflected in the title used on "Shakedown Street", "All New Minglewood Blues. The Dead stopped playing "New New Minglewood Blues" in 1971. Then in 1976, they began playing "All New Minglewood Blues", which they recorded in 1978 for "Shakedown Street". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3foGsa2dWOU Only the first verse remained from "New New Minglewood Blues", the rest of the song being completely overhauled.
