Bob Dylan Memorial Coliseum Portland, OR November 9, 1978 JEMS Master via Captain Acid Acid Project 045 Remastered By Captain Acid Artwork By Mr. D Recording Gear: Sony ECM-22p microphone > Sony TC-55 cassette recorder 2017 Transfer by Bas for JEMS: Nakamichi CR-7A azimuth-adjusted playback / Behringer Ultramatch 24/96 / XLR digital out (AES/EBU) > Edirol R44 (digi in) / SDcard / .wav / Captain Acid bath JEMS Notes Most if not all of JEMS Bob Dylan masters have been in circulation for years, but some of our ‘70s recordings have never been transferred and shared from direct digital transfers of the masters in the torrent era. This is one such recording. When Dylan came to the Pacific Northwest in November of 1978 for his first shows in the area in four years, JEMS was there to cover all three: Portland, Seattle and Vancouver. Our Seattle recording, done by Stan Gutoski on his legendary Tandberg reel to reel is the benchmark for this run, and because he was on home turf, he had no trouble getting the big deck into the venue. However, away from home in Portland and Vancouver, Stan switched to a smaller Sony portable to record the shows. The quality isn’t up to Seattle on Tandberg standards, but it is still very good. This marks the first time the Portland master tapes have been properly transferred and shared, with a little nudge from our ally Captain Acid who asked if we might have some ‘70s Dylan for him to work on. It just so happened that we had never gotten around to finishing our initial work on Portland Vancouver so we let him take over. Also unusual is that this transfer was made for JEMS by another ally, Bas, who volunteered to do some cassette transfers for us a few years back. He provided the 2496 .wav files and we thank him very much for his help and contribution to this project. It takes a village. As JEMS followers may know, we lost Stan in January, which was a huge loss to us and to the taping community at large. Later this year we’ll share a special tribute video we are putting together to honor his legacy. Thanks to Bas and to Captain Acid for their work in making the Dylan Portland ’78 project happen. BK for JEMS CAPTAIN ACID Notes Hi Dylan gang. I asked JEMS to provide some of Dylan`s recordings from 1978. They have send this tape and i was more than happy to work on it. I did phase, level and pitch correction. In the end i did new EQ, that was all.
