I’d sent some raw CD-Rs to friends overseas shortly after the tour but this current version is superior to all that have come before so you can bin all previous versions. Tamworth is a country town with a then population of 35,000 situated in the north west region of NSW, about a 5-hour drive from Sydney. Its claim to fame is it being known as Australia’s home of country music. The town calls itself the Country Music Capital, they hold a county music festival every year. These facts might be the reason Dylan included Tamworth on his 2001 Australian tour itinerary. By 2001 here in Sydney I’d attended many get togethers consisting of a group of Dylan fans, many of them diehard hard-core Dylan fans, some of whom caused problems for many non-diehard attendees at Sydney Dylan shows. It was at one of these meetings that we decided to hire a mini-bus to go to the other two others concert in NSW, they being Tamworth & Newcastle then back to Sydney for his open-air show in Centennial Park. Bright n early the day before the Tamworth show 12 of us departed Sydney in the afore mentioned mini-bus heading for Australia’s Country Music Capital, where we would meet others from the group who were making their own way to Tamworth. On reaching Tamworth later that day we found the town to be awash with Dylan fever. We were told a story that someone had spotted a solo Dylan walking up back lanes behind houses in an inner Tamworth suburb apparently studying Australian country architecture! He was seen here, there & everywhere, but according to more reliable sources in actual point of fact he hadn’t been seen anywhere, which would fit in with billboards outside local newsagents with a headline stating, “Bob Dylan visit shrouded in secrecy”. We were told later that he had flown in late afternoon on the day of the show & flew out later that night. Dylan’s long-time bass player Tony Garnier was spotted earlier going to & from the hotel across the road from where us mini-bus personal were staying. Because of this a few die hard’s stalked out this hotel in case Bob was staying there. Later on that arvo coming back to our motel from a drinking session myself & a few others actually bumped into a lone Tony Garnier also heading back to his digs, our group approached him, had a quick chat, he was polite & friendly but I dreaded some dead set drongo in our group asking him “Is Bob staying at your hotel, if not where is he staying?". Sure enough moments after I thought it, this very question was put to him, Tony smiled, politely said no, said his goodbyes & departed the scene. Dylan was Tamworth’s first major international entertainer to ever play the town. When we arrived at the sold-out venue the atmosphere was dead-set electric. The attendees ranged from Tamworth’s elite to farmers & their farmhands. Even the infamous Frederica from Italy was outside the joint doing her thing. For the gig, my ticket was in Section B in the 8th row providing a good view of the stage. I had a feeling because he was playing Australia’s version of Nashville that the set list might be sort of countryfied & to a point it was. I got to hear 4 songs from one of my Top 5 Dylan albums 1969’s Nashville Skyline. The Lay, Lady, Lay version performed this night is IMHO the best one of the 2001 versions. Also 3 of my 4 favourites from 1997’s Time Out Of Mind were played. I love the lone scream from an audience member after Dylan sings the line “I don’t know whether to kiss you or kill you” in Standing In The Doorway. Mixed in where some old favourites such as Mama, You Been On My Mind with a snatch of Australia’s unofficial national anthem Waltzing Matilda in it. Also it was the only time Bob played harp during the show. His band is top notch with Bob introducing them as the best band in the world. The main part of the show ended with Leopard Skin-Pill-Box Hat with the audience wanting more, except maybe for the Aussie wag who can be heard saying “Don’t come back!” which has to be in jest! From my seat throughout the show I could see Bob (dressed all in black) & the band smiling / laughing amongst themselves. They were certainly enjoying the gig as were the audience. After the encores finished we wanted more & so we were treated to a rare 2nd encore of Rainy Day Women with some new lyrics, well they were to me. When that song ended Bob before walking offstage could be seen grinning while blowing air kisses to the audience. The downside to this rather good recording is that for the first 8 songs I was sat behind 5 or 6 local yokels who insisted on having conversations on & off from the get-go. I can never fathom why people pay top dollar to chat amongst themselves instead of watching the show. It’s like they think they in a pub or back on the lounge at home, not in a concert hall. My mic picked up their ramblings as well as myself whispering shut up, fuck off plus assorted sighs. From Lay, Lady, Lay onwards this posse of clowns started to break up so their yacking isn’t as constant, most of the time it isn’t louder than the music. They’re at their worst during Desolation Row. I’ve been able to decipher some of their inane chit chat such as during this song the alpha male dropkick talks about 'Maryanne, you know her she was married to Jack, now she’s married to Jim a really handsome dark haired man'. His equally moronic female companion says she saw him (Dylan) in 1977, obviously she referring to Dylan’s 1978 Australian Tour as he never toured anywhere in 1977. After I’ll Be Your Baby Tonight winds up one of the females can be heard talking about looking at lettuce, yes dear readers lettuce the green leafy vegetable. Luckily by then this group of turds is slowly breaking up to go down the front. Lettuce girl informs them she’s leaving when the next “dancey” song comes on. None of them thank christ came back to their seats. But don’t let these local yokels put you off downloading this torrent, it’s a good recording as well as a good performance by Bob & his band. Tamworth was my 11th Dylan show since Sydney 1978. Not only was it my favourite of the three shows I saw on the Australian 2001 tour, this show & that tour remain my favourites to this day. For those interested I taped 7 of those previous 10 Dylan shows, hopefully some of those will be up on DIME in the future. No beat clapping but some talking. Thanks again to audiowhore. Enjoy, Waz
