LK Upgrade (see notes), NOTES from the generous donator:, A few months ago when word of this release emerged, I was asked my opinion, as to whether it was a new PA tape or just a remaster. It turned out that, it is just a remaster (it is an improvement, but how much of an improvement, is very subjective...), Anyway in the course of my investigation I listened to:, - BBC Broadcast (the original vinyl bootleg), - The Circus is in Town, - the BBC 65 broadcast in the 1965 box set, - At the Beeb, - I also listened to a very old 'non-bootleg' tape I've had for around 20 years., These are all derived from the same source tape (a mic in front of a TV set)., IMHO the quality of the CDs is pretty straight forward with 'Circus' worst and, 'Beeb' best (slightly better than the 1965 box set one)., I prefer the sound of the Vinyl boot, but unfortunately that is accompanied by, the inevitable pop & clicks of vinyl boots., However it turned out that my tape was even better quality than At the Beeb and, furthermore did not contain some of the imperfections now present in the sound, of 'Beeb'., I then resolved to master my tape (when I had time) and spread it around. However, circumstances have overtaken me with 'At the Beeb' CD being treed. While I have, no desire to discourage people signing up for this tree, I am aware that a better, source is available and would be preferred to 'Beeb'., ----------------------------------------, Hello to all, I hope to not offend the seeder of this set but I would like to warn people that, the SHN LK version of the Beeb 65 broadcasts is corrupted (probably due to a bad, transfer analog->HDD). Please note that I didn't download the torrent and compared, it to my version but mine has been seeded directly by lk., Here's my review of the recording:, Presumably better than "At the Beeb" bootleg CD but certainly NOT, in my opinion., If this recording doesn't have the heavy hum that was present on "Beeb" bootleg, throughout most of the track 01, on the other hand it contains MANY flaws that are, NOT on "Beeb" bootleg CD. In fact, all tracks of the lk version (except, track 8) are surfaced with clicks/pops or slight skips., Personally, I would discourage you to trade for this version and would recommend, you to find the "At The Beeb" (Mainstream) bootleg CD instead, much more enjoyable, still in my opinion., So, below is a list of the most audible surface noise I noticed while I was, listening to the lk version (original SHN set, md5's above). They could be, the result of a bad CD extraction or an incorrect HDD .wav reading/writing while, tape transfer (I don't know). All I know is that noises I heard are not supposed, to be there!, *Remember, none of these flaws are present on the "Beeb" bootleg CD*, List of clicks/pops/skips:, Track 1, 0:22, Track 2, 0:04, 1:16, 4:29-4:30, 5:03, Track 3, 0:50, 2:34, 3:10, 4:21, 4:29, 4:57-4:58, 6:10, 6:47, Track 4, 1:22-1:23 (slight skips), 2:00, Track 5, 1:48, 2:27, 3:07, 4:27 to 4:30, 5:00, 5:08, 5:49, Track 6, 1:26, 1:30, 3:18, 3:25, Track 7, 0:45-0:46, 1:04, 1:31, 2:34, Track 8, (none?), Track 9, 0:06, 0:26, 0:43, 2:31, 6:42 (skip), Track 10, 2:33, 2:40, 4:44, Track 11, 1:43, Track 12, 1:15, 2:10, 2:56, 3:58, 4:18 (click on right channel), other flaw: The first track in the original SHN set distributed via dylantree.com, has a sector boundary error., questions or comments email livecohen@hotmail.com, Note:, an actual PA recording of the BBC 65 show has recently been located., Here the taper recorded directly from the TV, rather than using a mic, in front of the TV (Thanks to lk for the info!)., TO JEFFERSON: could you please verify if your copy does contain the flaws, mentionned above. Maybe someone has corrected the flaws somewhere in the line..., It's curious because the LK version has widely circulated but no one seems to, care about those flaws., all the best, J-F, ----------------------------------------, jefferson:, Thanks for the info, liveman. I have given the disc a quick listen and do, in, fact, hear some (but not all) of the particulars you mention. Not sure whether, they are due to surface noise present at the source or were introduced during, the transfer. Either way, I think we can say with confidence that LK's version, is different than "At the Beeb." Some say better (LK). Others say not (liveman)., These are subjective judgments and i always encourage each individual listener, to put their own ears to the test. Your "do not trade" is, in my view, an extreme, position. Personally, i appreciate the "sonic warmth" of LK's upgrade. But that's, just me., Whatever the case, if someone has re-worked and smoothed out these tracks, i would, love to hear it. And the PA source would be especially grande., Regards, Jeff
